REST – Does It Mean Don’t Row or Row Slow?

There are two different types of “rest” you may encounter during workouts:

Active Rest

Active rest means continuing to move at a lower intensity during the recovery period. This could include light rowing or performing a drill. While this is less common, it may occasionally be prescribed in a workout.

Full Rest

Most of the time, “rest” simply means taking a break. We recommend stepping off the erg, stretching your legs and back, hydrating, and preparing for the next interval.

During workouts, you’ll usually have target paces or stroke rates to hit. Managing your recovery well can help you maintain those targets throughout the session.

If you prefer to row lightly during your rest period, that’s completely fine. Just remember that the priority is hitting the workout targets and maintaining quality pacing, not accumulating extra meters during recovery.
