How Do I Follow the Prescribed Stroke Rate?

Maintaining a specific stroke rate can take practice, especially if you're new to rowing. One helpful tool is a metronome app, which can help you develop a consistent rhythm and stay close to your target stroke rate.

Using a Metronome

Set the metronome to match your prescribed stroke rate:

  • 20 SPM = 1 stroke every 3 seconds
  • 24 SPM = 1 stroke every 2.5 seconds
  • 30 SPM = 1 stroke every 2 seconds

Listening to the beat can help you establish a steady rowing rhythm and improve your consistency during workouts.

Don't Worry About Being Perfect

You may not hit the exact stroke rate right away, and that's completely normal. As you gain more experience, you'll develop a better feel for the rhythm and become more consistent at staying close to your target stroke rate.

The goal isn't to hit the exact number every second, but to stay reasonably close while maintaining good technique and the intended workout intensity.
